ALLMAN BROTHERS: The Brothers Return, 5 Years Later

The Brothers, the group featuring the remaining members of the final Allman Brothers Band lineup, are getting together again for two shows at New York's Madison Square Garden on Tuesday and Wednesday. The shows come five years after Jaimoe, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge and Marc Quinones played a concert to mark the Allmans 50th anniversary on March 10th, 2020 -- just before pandemic lockdowns kicked in. Derek Trucks tells us that getting back together could only have happened because Jaimoe was interested in doing it. And that interest was sparked after Jaimoe sat in at a Tedeschi Trucks Band show last summer.

Derek Trucks says The Brothers shows are happening because Jaimoe wanted to do them. "Jaimoe had been out to a few of our gigs, me and Susan. I think we played Bridgeport, Connecticut and we set up a third kit and he sort of came and went. And immediately before I turned around and looked to see if he was there, I could just feel that the energy had shifted. Maybe a week or so after that we had just been chatting a bunch and then I started hearing that there were talks about maybe doing something and Jaimoe's the only one who could call and where you'd go, alright let's put everything down and let's do this." Both Trucks and his fellow guitarist Warren Haynes have done Allmans material since the band retired in 2014, and Haynes says the band's catalog "just kind of penetrates your being and stays with you." "You know, it's embedded in our souls. You know, we've been playing it for so long. We both grew up playing it before we were involved, being part of the band for so many years. It speaks to the music itself and how great and how timeless that music is. Which I think includes the music

that we all made together as well"

The five former Allmans members will be joined by Joe Russo (drums), Reese Wynans (keys),

Isaac Eady (drums) and special guest -- and 1970s Allmans member -- Chuck Leavell on piano.

For people not lucky enough to have tickets to the shows, both concerts will be streamed on Nugs.net. And Haynes says that for people going to or watching both, "we might repeat a handful of songs, but the sets will be drastically different."

SAMMY HAGAR: Shows He Can't Drive 55

Sammy Hagar posted a video of himself and his oldest son Aaron tooling around California this past Saturday in his Cobra. This is the same one Sammy tried to sell last year, but there were no takers, which he says made Aaron happy. "It's just too cute. 420-horsepower, 420 pounds of torque and it weighs about 18-hundred pounds. That thing is a rocket ship, and my son

Aaron, he said, 'Pop don't sell it. Don't sell it.' So, eh, we'll see." Built in 2020 and a continuation of the 1962 model, it was priced at $279,950, which his bandmate Michael Anthony believes was too high.

SMASHING PUMPKINS: Billy Admits Melon Opera Scares Him

Billy Corgan admits that the seven nights of performing The Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness as an opera this fall at the Lyric Opera of Chicago scares him a bit.

Corgan wrote on his Substack, "7 full shows, performed by a full orchestra, a full choir, and 4 of the world’s great operatic soloists with yours truly performing alongside them. I have to say that normally when I stand on a darkened stage, my heart does not race nor am I nervous at all... I know I will be fine, there are my songs after all(!), and if I was singing Wagner I think you would have to ask me to seek help; for the technical skill needed to sing opera is certainly beyond me; as well I deeply respect the art and am no dime store tenor." "BUT….I will be on that stage and I will have to meet the moment. And that, at age 58 and counting, is a feeling I’m not used to anymore; that feeling that something in music might be beyond me." A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness and features Corgan and the guest vocalists backed by the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra and Chorus performing orchestral and operatic versions of the 28 songs from the double album from November 21st through November 30th.

RUSH: For What They're Worth

Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson was asked by CBC Music to name five songs that changed his life, and, not surprisingly, they're all from the '60s during his formative years.

“Sink the Bismarck” – Johnny Horton (1960) “It’s the first single record that I bought. I think it was in 1961, when I was…10 or 11 years old. It was a song about the German battleship The Bismarck and the sinking of it. “I was so into all things to do with the Second World War, and, you know, was part of that [Baby] Boomer generation. And it all seemed so cool. And to go out and actually buy the record was a big deal for me.”

(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” – The Rolling Stones (1965) “‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ … was a really big deal for me. I got that record in 1965. And I remember that year, because my father took my sister and me to Yugoslavia, and I took the record with me, ’cause I wanted to play it for my relatives. “What really knocked me out about that song was Keith Richards’ [distorted] guitar sound… That’s become such a signature for decades now.”

For What It’s Worth” – Buffalo Springfield (1966) “[It’s] probably my favorite song ever. I remember hearing it in my dad’s car… I was [about 13 years old] and I had my rose-colored granny glasses, trying to be a kind of cool hippie-ish kind of kid. That song came on, and it was a revelation. It was the most amazing song I ever heard. “I ended up buying that record and I played it until there were no grooves left. There was just something about the acoustic guitars in it, the electric guitars…everything about it was just so well-crafted. And it blew my mind. And to this day, whenever I hear it, I get chills and I get goosebumps.” Rush recorded “For What It’s Worth” for their 2004 covers EP, Feedback.

How Many More Times” – Led Zeppelin (1969) “They just received eight copies on import from the U.K., and I was one of those eight people that got a copy of that album. And I raced home…and put it on, and looked at the cover over and over and over again, and thought, ‘Oh my God, one day I would love to be like this.’” Lifeson and original Rush drummer John Rutsey

went to see Zeppelin in 1969 in their hometown of Toronto. “We were sitting right in front of Jimmy Page…about one row of people back, and he brought that violin bow out and played. It was like, ‘Oh my God, this guy’s amazing!’ And instantly, he became my hero.”

Are You Experienced” – The Jimi Hendrix Experience (1967) “What a great album that was. I remember…being at John Rutsey’s [house] when his brothers got that album. His older brothers got the album, and we were downstairs in their basement. They had a record player down there, and we put it on. Nobody said a word, nobody made a sound while that record played. We were just in awe of it, and totally shocked. "'Are You Experienced' was “the first time I heard backwards anything, backwards guitar. Jimi…reversed the whole track, and then sang over it. So everything was backwards. Who would think to do something like that? And it was such a cool innovative sound that we’d never ever imagined before.”
