The xx Reflects On 10 Years Since Debut Album

Successful or not, 10 years is a long time to be a band.

For The xx, this year marks one decade since its hit self-titled debut album, but that doesn't mean the band members are grizzled veterans of the industry.

Singer/guitarist Romy Madley Croft tells Q104.3 New York's Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke that she's still holding on to a sense of wonder at what her band has been able to achieve in its still young career.

"It's changed our life," she tells the show. "And I don't want it to feel too much like it's the end by talking about that, but it was really nice to reflect on 10 years and what's changed, and a lot has changed."

Singer/bassist Oliver Smith agrees, noting he still feels like a neophyte, which he believes is a good sign.

"The thing I find strange is kind of asking ourselves like what we've learned in the past 10 years," he says. "I think we've learned a lot; I just don't feel like a seasoned musician, artist, performer, and I think we're still very much on the journey."

He adds that he feels like "an imposter" when he reminisces about The xx's gold albums or industry accolades. But the misgivings about whatever measure of stardom The xx enjoys don't come from an emphasis on being humble, but rather genuine surprise at how far music has taken the trio.

"I love that we've all got these experiences from all these places around the world," Croft says.
